If I Was Principal For a Week

If I was principal for a week these are the five things I would change:

1. I would make the school lunchtime longer because students are having too much fun and then they can't finish their game when lunchtime finishes.

2. I would extend the playground because the students would love to have the playground extented with more playing area.

3. I would add rugby posts because it gives the students more practice for rugby and league if they are kicker on their team.

4. I would add soccer goals underneath the rugby posts because then it gives you a variety of sports that the students can play.

5. I would install a fully lined out basketball court because the students would enjoy practising at school in their lunch hour or free time.

What Are You Most Proud Of

In this activity we had to ask three of our friends what they are most proud of this year.

Cailan: Solving a rubiks in under 45s.
Korban: Learning how to double frontflip.
Xavier: Learning how to do scooter tricks.

Similes

In this activity we had to use similes.
Alex is as tall as a big giant
Cailan is as small as a marble
A rose is as beautiful as 20 flowers bunched up
Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce is as fast as a Lamborghini

Research About Lorde

In this activity we had to research about  Lorde and the history of her family and religion.

Collage Art

We have been learning to make a collage on Google Drawing. We had to use the explore, mask and arrange tools to get our collage to come together. We had to make a NZ bird and put it into its habitat. It was a lot of fun and I am really pleased with my bird. Have you ever had a go at this?

Information Report About Bees

Why Are Bees Declining?

WALT
We are learning to write an information report.
 Success Criteria:
We will plan and then write an information report on a topic of our choice related to bees.
Our report will:
Be interesting!
Give information about a topic of our choice related to bees.
Show a clear link to our planning.
Start with an opening statement about our topic.
Have at least 3 paragraphs.  Each paragraph will have an opening statement and a series of facts related to that statement.
Include some complex or compound sentence structures.
Include at least one diagram, photograph, illustration or map to go with the text.
Finish with a general statement about the topic.
Use information from at least 3 different sources.  This information will be written in our own words and we will write down our sources at the end of our report.

Bees have been declining for the last 20 years. The population is still decreasing as I write. It is not good that the bee population is declining. The three main reasons bees are declining is intensive farming, climate change and varroa mites.

Intensive Farming
Intensive land use is destroying the bees habitat and the bees are dying because they
lose their habitat and shelter. Intensive farming is taking up too much of the space
so the bees can not live anywhere.
Intensive farming is not good for the environment because it kills the animals and destroys the forest. For intensive farming they also use pesticides which affects the bees because they spray it on the plants and flowers where the bees crawl all over the plants and kills them.

How Climate Change Is Bad For Bees
Climate change is causing habitat loss as bees fail to migrate to cooler areas and establish new hives. As average monthly temperatures rise, flowers bloom earlier in the spring, creating a potential mismatch in seasonal timing between when flowers produce pollen and when bees are ready to feed on that pollen. Even a small mismatch of three to six days could negatively affect bees’ health, making them less likely to reproduce and less resistant to predators and parasites.

Varroa Mites

Varroa mites are one of the worst problems why bees are declining. Varroa mites sneak into the hive.  By sneaking into the hive they attach to the adult bees and feed on them until they get to the hive. Once bees are in the hive they slip undetected  into a vulnerable uncapped *brood* cells and this is where the Varroa mites feed on the undeveloped bees. Brood cells means a cell used for the rearing of a larva. These were the three main reasons why bees are declining.

Beach Cookout

Today R1 & R8 went to the beach for a cookout.

In my group was Milan, Rebekkah, Nathan J and Wyatt and our adult supervisor
was Mrs Maclean.
We were trying to make a campfire shaped in a triangle position and wait for
it to burn down to embers so we could cook our food.
My group made fish tortillas and pancakes.
We then had to clean our plates and get ready to go back to school.
It was really fun and yum but it was time to go back to school. I had fun and enjoyed it.

Noho Marae Recount

Marae Recount

On Tuesday the 5th of *march we were getting ready to go to the
Arahura *marae.
We were getting into our cars and getting ready to leave.
Everyone was excited and waiting to leave.

Powhiri Process

The drive took about 15 mins to get to the marae.
When we were out of our cars we had to put on our rain jackets because it was raining.
Before we started the powhiri process outside the gate we had  to sing He Honore.
After He *honore one of the tangata whenua came and opened the gate.
Then the kaikaranga started to call us on to the marae.
Miss Ireland started to call back until we were at the edge of
the porch where the Tangata Whenua were standing. Before we went inside we took our shoes off. The boys would sit in front of the girls.
Then the whaikorero from the Tangata whenua spoke first, after he had finished the whaikorero from the manuhiri spoke.
Finally after the whaikorero was finished we sang a waiata,
and gave the gift to the Tangata whenua.
Morning Tea

After we had finished the powhiri we went
into the wharekai to have some morning tea before
we went down to the river.
There were savories, red velvet cake and water, I really enjoyed the red velvet cake. Everyone liked the food and was ready to look for some pounamu.
Pounamu Hunting
When we were down at the river it was really fun looking for
pounamu but unfortunately I did not find any pounamu, but Clem,
Sam, Ethan and some other people were lucky enough to find some pounamu. After the river we went to the beach to make sculptures.

Beach Sculptures
We were at the beach finding out our groups, I was in a group with
Nathan K, Callan, Xavier, Nathanael, Charlie and Nathan J.
We had to make a sculpture of Poutini the taniwha or Waitiki the lady,
my group made Waitiki. My group made ours out of sand and other things
we could find down at the beach.
Night Activities
We had some activities to do when we got back. There were four activities
but we could only pick two of our favourite choices.
I picked rippa rugby and carving. The other two options were weaving and ki o rahi.
The Next Day
We all woke up and started packing up all our stuff and put it
in the cars before breakfast. For breakfast I had cornflakes, peaches and yoghurt.
We were saying our goodbyes and sang a waitia.

Lake Daniell Tramp

Lake Daniell Day Tramp

On the 12th of june we went to the Lewis Pass to do the Lake Daniell Tramp.
First we had to go in our car groups and go there.
My car group was Sam, Zac, Cullam, Jaxon and I, our driver was Matt Levien.
We left at about 8:45 am. It took us at least 1 hour and 30 minutes to get marble hill
car park.

Once we got there we went over the rules and the risks of being stupid.
We started walking the track and it started off well.
I was walking with Nathan k and Nathan J.
We had our first break after 30 mins of walking. I had a barley sugar and a muesli bar.
It took at least 2 hours to get to the lake and another 2 hours back to the start.

When we got the lake everyone went on the jetty.
I almost got pushed in by Nathan J.
We then had our lunch and a drink before we left to set off again.
On the way back we grabbed big sticks and through them into the river at the last bridge.
My heels were really saw after the walk and just wanted to go home, but we had to
drive back so 1 hour and 30 minutes of weird and funny songs we arrived
at school at about 6:00 pm.
The tramp was really fun but my feet were really saw after the walk.

Lightning Never Strikes Twice Writing

Example

Lightning never strikes twice, does it?
That was the question that occupied their frightened minds as they crouched, huddling together, next the pile of dusty sacks in the base of the windmill…
Could you write a short paragraph describing what it would be like to be caught in a storm, using some of your ideas from above?

When it became night the lightning hit the ground like a meteorite crashing. The lightning sounded like a ferocious lion roaring. The building wasn’t doing but suddenly it started to creak. The moon was trying to shine through the thick black clouds until the lightning struck and pushed the clouds in front of the bright shiny moon. The sky was as black as my room at night. Ka Boom!! The thunder sounded like a freight train going down the track. The fat lady on the other side of the paddock. I sat down to brush my muddled up hair when I noticed something out of the corner of my eye, another windmill across from me about 200 metres away with a figure of a boy in it. The lighting had finished but the crashing of the thunder hadn’t. About 6.00 AM the thunder suddenly stopped and the whole place looked like a complete mess same with the other windmill. I was so scared but now it's over I am glad.
