Lake Daniell Recount

 Lake Daniell

The day before we left we had to learn about hypothermia and Leave No Trace, what I learnt about hypothermia is hypothermia is a extremely dangerous drop in body temperature, and that Leave No trace is to leave everything the way you left it so no  breaking the branches off of trees and no leaving rubbish lying around.

On the day before we left we had to have a gear check, and the day before the preparation was super easy because I had all the gear that was required and I could find all my gear easily.

We went to Lake Daniell, Lake Daniell is about 5 minutes past Springs Junction heading towards the Lewis Pass. We went on Wednesday the 9th of September and it was fun because Cooper and I had a pretend fight on the way there and on the way back and Cooper won both times.

I travelled with Flynn, Nathan, Cooper and Craig Swinburn and we walked with the rest of the class. We did the Lake Daniell tramp because it was one of our William Pike outdoor activities. I like the William Pike challenge because it gives us plenty of opportunities to get outside and try new things.

The hut we walked to is called Kohanga Atawhai - Manson Nicholls Hut. The track is in the Southern Alps. This tramp was a spring walk.

I really enjoyed being able to go out and enjoy the wilderness for the William Pike Challenge again because we haven't been able to get out much because of Covid-19. I also really enjoyed being able to go tramping with my friends and have a laugh.

I didn’t like it when I sprained my ankle because it hurt so bad and I had to go to the hospital and get an X-Ray to make sure it wasn’t broken. I also didn’t like it when my heels started hurting on the way back and they hurt so bad.

I really appreciated the parents giving up their time to come out and provide transport for our tramp and also participating in the tramp, I also really appreciated the people that made sure I was okay when I sprained my ankle.

I wonder how many steps the children and adults have completed when they combine their steps together? I also wonder how many Long Tailed Bats live in the beech forest around Lake Daniell?

Coversation Week Poem

 I’m a River

Water glaring in the sun

Shimmering off rubbish

Trees dancing around me

Litter flowing in the current

Dirt from my soft waterbed

Birds singing all around me

Water hitting the rocks

As fast as the ocean current

Rubbish flying through the air

Delightful smell of fresh grass

And soil laying beside me

Beach Cookout 2020

On Wednesday room 8 went to the beach behind the Marist rugby ground. We went to the beach for a cook out to fill in our outdoor activities and to have a good lunch. My group had Nathan, Korban, Kade and I. Our group made noodle weeny dogs and smores, we also had some lollies to have before our food cooked. To build the fire we needed to collect tinder and kindling. For our group it was easy to find kindling and tinder. To get our kindling and tinder there was a bunch of sticks behind our group. When we went over there and collected the stuff we were able to start our fire. We used matches to start our fire. I brought the marshmallows and a pot, Nathan brought some lollies, plastic utensils and the spaghetti, Korban brung the sausages and the chocolate sauce and Kade brung the biscuits and some more lollies. Our lunch was great, I would definitely have it again. Our adult that had helped us was Justine Howe, Kades mum.

Short Story

We had to write a short story in 500-600 words.

My Crazy Life My father and I lived in Tonga on a small farm with some farm animals to supply food and only lived 2km away from the best school. I had lots of friends and was very good at any sport I played but mainly focused on rugby, my mother died of cancer when I was 8. A guy knocked on our door while I was in bed, I overheard my dad and the guy talking. Most of it I couldn’t understand but I heard the worst news of my life. My dad is moving to America to work for a videography company and I couldn’t go with him, so I had to move to New Zealand. I was only 13 at the time and going to New Zealand by myself on a cargo ship was going to be really hard for me, especially after I found out my dad is moving to America. Finally I arrived in New Zealand and my aunt Kerry was waiting for me on the dock. Aunt Kerry drove me to her house in Akaroa. I didn’t talk the whole way because I didn’t know what to say. My first day of school was terrible, I didn’t know anyone except for my cousin Nick but he didn’t want to even look at me. For the rest of the week I sat on my own with everyone looking at me. My 4th week of school I finally found someone to hangout with at school, His name was Harry. For the next year I was still sad about my dad leaving, but Harry knew what I was going through and supported me for the rest of the year. Something terrible had happened, Harry had been hit by a car while he was walking to my house. I got told he was in the hospital, I went to see him but I got told he was not in good enough condition for visitors, so I went home and was sad all over again. Wondering if Harry will be alright I went for a run to clear everything from my mind. When I got back, it felt strange, no one was home and I started getting worried. I checked the skatepark looking for my cousin. He wasn't there, I then checked my aunt's work. She wasn’t there, now I was really concerned. The next day, I had missed a call from my cousin, if he is calling it must be bad. I called him back, no answer, I tried again still no answer. I rang the police and told them, “my aunt and cousin had been missing for the past 2 days and weren’t answering my calls”. The police officer responded, “what is your address we will be there in 15 minutes”. 15 minutes later the police officer arrived and started asking me questions, about when I saw them last. I said, “I saw them at about 3:45 pm yesterday before I went for my run and when I got back they were gone”. The next day the police had found my aunt and cousin. After 2 years my dad had got sick of his job and he came to New Zealand to pick me up and go back to Tonga, when he got here I was surprised because I didn’t know he was coming back. He stayed for a week and then we left to go back to tonga, We bought our house back and lived there happily ever after.

This is the criteria of the sandwich.

1.Healthiness of Ingredients: 2/2
2.Overall Cost of Manafacture 2/2
3.Eye Appeal/ Presentation 1/2
4.Ease of Handling 1/2
5.And Finally the Taste 2/2
So overall my sandwich is a solid 8/10

Sea Week Work

Scavenger Hunt

Name: Tyler

Questions Worksheet

W.A.L.T: understand Earth systems.

Fact Card #1: How does water move on the surface of the ocean?

The water in the ocean is constantly moving. On the surface, water moves in the form of waves.

Fact Card #2: How does water move below the surface of the ocean?
In great currents.

Fact Card #3: What are the two types of ocean currents?

Surface currents and deep currents.

Fact Card #4: Define ocean currents.

Moving streams of water within the ocean.

Fact Card #5: Define the ‘surface current’.

Currents that move on or near the surface of the ocean are called surface current.

Fact Card #6: List the factors which control the surface currents.

Air Currents, earth's rotation, and location of continents.

Fact Card#7: Which factors affect the flow of ocean surface water?

Global wind belts are a major factor affecting the flow of ocean surface water.

Fact Card#8: How are deep currents generated in the ocean?

Difference in the water density due to the temperature gradient.

Fact Card#9: Write down the characteristics of cold and warm water.

Cold is more dense, Warm is less dense.

Fact Card #10: Which ocean currents travel faster?

Surface currents travel much faster than deep ocean currents.

Fact Card #11: Write the factors that cause the deep currents.

Temperature, how salty the water is, and density of the water.

Fact Card #12: How do the Sun and the Moon cause the ocean currents?

The gravitational pull of the moon and the sun is also an important factor to cause ocean currents.

Fact Card #13: Give the definition of wave.

A wave is a rhythmic movement that carries energy through matter or space.

Fact Card#14: What are the causes of waves?

Wind, Earthquakes, Gravitational force of the sun and moon.

Fact Card#15: List the characteristics of a wave.

Wavelength, Wave height, Crest, Trough.

Fact Card#16: Write the parameters on which the wave height is.

Wind speed, distance over which the wind blows and the length of time (fetch) the wind blows.

Fact Card #17: What happens during tide?

Tide is a periodic rise and fall of the sea level under the gravitational pull of the sun and the Moon.

Fact Card #18: What do you mean by high tide?

It is at its highest point.

Fact Card #19: What do you mean by low tide?

Water level is at the lowest

Fact Card #20: How does the Moon’s gravity pull ocean water?

The moon's gravity pulls the water on the earth towards it. The water moves up into a slight bulge on the side of the earth that faces the moon.

Fact Card#21: What is the cycle duration of high/low tide?

Generally one low tide\high tide cycle takes every 12 hours and 25 mins.

Fact Card#22: Define tidal range.

The difference in ocean level between high tide and low tide is called a tidal range.

Fact Card#23: When does spring tide occur?

Spring tides occur when the Earth, sun and the moon are in a line.

Fact Card #24: Which tides occur during a full/new moon?

Spring tides occur during the full moon and the new moon.

Fact Card #25: When does neap tide occur?

Neap tides occur when the sun and moon are perpendicular to each other.

Fact Card #26: Which tides occur during the quarter moon?

Neap Tide

Fact Card #27: Which tides are known as weak tides?

Neap tides are weak tides as the gravitational forces of the moon and sun counteract each other, creating weaker tidal forces.

Fact Card#28: Which tides are known as strong tides?

Spring tides are strong tides because the moon and              the sun's gravitational force combine to create a strong tide.
